Signing at Harrods - Second Act

Hoping to see Joan after the matinee on Sunday, these two pictures are from my personal collection and were taken at the Harrods booksigning for Second Act in 1996.

Joan leaves Harrods after the signing and as she made her way through the book department to the exit, someone called out to her, and she smiled and waved to an ever appreciative crowd of fans, as I clicked the shutter.

Today's picture was taken at the 1983 Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles and shows Joan arriving with Gordon Thomson. Joan was nominated and won the award for Best Actress in a dramatic series.

One Night With Joan

From tonight until Sunday 18th, Joan is back by popular demand at the Leicester Square Theatre in London with her one woman show "One Night With Joan".

I will be at the matinee on Sunday afternoon, and so no blog this weekend - but next Monday I will post a blog about the show.

Today's picture is a rare shot of Joan with Leonard Rossiter from the famous Cinzano Adverts, which were classic.

I have been working on the website since the weekend, updating the film pages which has not left much time for the daily blog.

There is still lots more to add, so keep visiting.
Thanks to those who have e-mailed me, and a big thank you to everyone for supporting the site

Daily Picture - Legends and Joan

This lovely picture of Joan is from the 2007 US tour of Legends, which I saw in Phoenix, Arizona.
As I enjoyed the play and have performed in theatre myself - I had to add the script to my collection.

Here's a description of Joan's character from the play.
SYLVIA GLENN - Attractive, flashy, former movie star, now around sixty. Still lots of pep and sas. Ambitious to reactivate her career, many times married, but now broke. Beneath the rather shiny veneer, there is a warm woman who shows herself when she feels secure. In films she usually played the strong, pushy type, like Crawford. She hardly ever played "a lady of breeding" She and Aretha have a special relationship which allows them to put each other "on" without any hurt feelings.

And Linda Evan's character ....

LEATRICE MONSEE - (Pronounced Mon-say) - Leatrice is around the same age, give or take a few years, as Sylvia. She is a far different kind of movie star, one who always played nuns, nurses and saints. Her public figure was always one of "goodness" but beneath the surface, she was just as strong as Sylvia. A Loretta Young or Joan Fontaine type with a reputation for sweetness but underneath lurked what came to be known as "an iron butterfly"

Daily Picture - Joan and Anthony Newley

I have been asked if I have any photos of Joan with Anthony Newley other than 'young married ones' that keep appearing on the internet.

This lovely one of them both was taken in April 1991 at the launch party for the BBC series of Noel Coward playlets, "Tonight at 8.30".
As fans know Joan was married to Anthony from 1963-1970, a marriage that gave her two children, Sacha Alexander Newley and Tara Newley, and as a family they co-starred in the film "Can Hieronymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness"

I was fortunate to meet Anthony in 1986 when he toured my home town, as previously featured on the blog.
Sadly, Anthony died on 14 April 1999 at the age of 67

Other photos of Joan and Anthony can be found in the galleries section of the website.

On The Newstands - 28 February (Part 2)

29th February and continuing yesterday's post of magazines, this issue of German magazine Bunte from 2002 was one of many countries to feature Joan's wedding picture on their cover.

As mentioned yesterday, Joan and Percy chose English OK Magazine for the exclusive coverage of their wedding.

Our second magazine goes back to 1959, another English magazine called Picturegoer which Joan was featured on a number of times.

This issue was only a cover shot - I cannot find anything inside the magazine about her.

Le Lundi was a French magazine that featured Joan on their covers a number of times, and this issue from 1987 had a 4 page article inside.

The last one to feature in this post is actually more of a newspaper than magazine, called The Weekly News from 2004.

Daily Picture - Marisa Berenson & Joan

Today's picture of Joan with Marisa Berenson in one of the early scenes in the first episode of Sins, at the launch party for Helene Junot's new magazine, Couture (Woman of Today)

On The Newstand - 28 February (Part 1)

Looking back in the archives for today I have seven magazines. So I am going to feature 3 in today's post and as tomorrow is a leap year day will feature the other 4 and there were are not many magazines published on 29th February!!

Starting with 1983, this Spanish magazine TP Teleprograma featured Joan and the cast of Dynasty on their cover.

In 1989 this American issue of Globe is what we call a shared cover as Joan is not the only celebrity on the cover.

The magazine was featuring an article about Alexis slaying Blake with a butcher's knife in a forthcoming episode of Dynasty.

In 2002 OK Magazine was chosen by Joan and Percy for the Exclusive coverage of their wedding. Under the headline "All The Pictures The World Has Waited to See" they would appear in publications worldwide.

Remember to check tomorrow's post for Part 2 of these magazines which range from 1959 - 2004

On The Newstand - 26th February

Staying with Sins from yesterday's post - this German magazine, Freizeit Revue would have been for sale on newstands in Germany with Joan, full cover as Helene Junot from the mini series, Sins.

Inside was a 1 1/2 page article about her then divorce from husband no. 4, Peter Holm.

On The Newstands - 25th February

There were 2 magazines in the archives that would have been on sale on 25th February. The first is a UK magazine no longer in print, called Celebrity.

Although Joan was not featured full cover, the article inside this weekly publication was about a tremor that hit the set of Dynasty while Joan was filming Season 8 with James Healey (Sean Rowan).

The second magazine from 1989 was from France and called Tele Z and featured Joan on the cover as Helene Junot in the mini series, Sins.

Daily Picture - 1950's Publicity

This lovely picture of Joan arrived in a box of memorabilia from my friends in America last December.

It is poster size, measuring 16" x 12", and taken in the 1950's around the time of "Island In The Sun" or "Stopover Tokyo"

On The Newstand - 24 February

I am featuring 3 magazines which you would have seen on the newstands today, 24th February, between 1983 & 1992

The first is a Dutch Magazine, called Hitkrant and Joan appears on the cover only, inside is a two page article about Dynasty with pictures of her co-stars, Geoffrey "Mark" Scott, Kathleen "Kirby" Beller & Gordon "Adam" Thomson.

The next magazine is also Dutch, a magazine called Story (there was a Belgian magazine with this title and Joan also featured on their covers - these will be featured at later dates in the blog or can be found on the website)

This 1984 issue features Joan on the cover with Dynasty co-star Michael "Dex" Nader and a 3 page article about Dynasty.

Moving on to 1992 and this American Magazine, Theater Week promoted Joan's tour of America in Noel Coward's famous play, Private Lives. Following a very successful run in London's West End, she is pictured on the cover of this magazine with co-star, Simon Jones (Keith Baxter was said not to be available for the US tour). Inside is a 2 1/2 page article, "Joan Collins's Private Lives - a backstage chat with America's favorite Wicked Woman"
